How the calculator works
We take your gross pay and subtract any 401(k) and other pre-tax deductions you enter. Federal income tax comes from the 2026 tax brackets after the standard deduction for your filing status. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, with an extra 0.9% above $200,000 for single filers. State tax uses each state's own rates and deductions. What is left is your take-home pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is take-home pay?
Take-home pay, also called net pay, is the amount you receive after taxes and deductions come out of your gross pay.
How accurate is this paycheck calculator?
It gives a close estimate for a standard Form W-4 with no extra adjustments. Your real paycheck can differ because of your W-4 choices, local taxes, and benefits your employer deducts.
Which states have no income tax on wages?
Texas, Florida and Tennessee are three of them, and each has its own calculator on this site. Alaska, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming also do not tax wages.
Do pre-tax deductions change my take-home pay?
Yes. A traditional 401(k) contribution lowers your income tax but not your Social Security and Medicare tax. Health insurance, HSA and FSA deductions usually lower all three.
